Seaside Treats

Seaside Treats - a poem by Hazel Goss

A pot of shrimps, crab in a shell,

Cockles, whelks, winkles, jellied eels.

Fresh smell of brine, squidgy textures.

Fruits of the sea, brought from the depths.

Fish and chips, evocative smell,

Douse with salt, vinegar, ketchup.

Sizzling batter, succulent cod.

Firm, golden chips, soft, white inside.

Candyfloss, pink spun spiderweb.

Edible stick of cotton wool,

Dissolving into sticky goo.

A sugary sweet confection.

Ice-cream, flavours, soft spiral cone.

Nuts or sprinkles, strawberry sauce,

Push in a fudge stick, chocolate flake,

Drooling, lick quick, before it melts.

Pink peppermint rock, printed through,

Or orange, lemon, twisted stripes.

Bite, crispy crunch, sticking to teeth,

Sharp shards, softening, swallowing.

Doughnuts bobbing in bubbling oil,

Rolled quickly in sugar, steaming.

Bite, suck in cool breath, hot, too hot.

Relish delicious decadence.
